Hanlon Trails Project
Guelph’s preferred mode of transit is 85% automobile, 5% transit and 10% other (Guelph State of Sustainability Report, 1996).
A new secondary school (Bishop Macdonell) and a new complex of sports fields are being constructed at the City’s southern boundary. Facilities are to be opened in 2003. Guelph’s preference for the car and additional specific barriers for these facilities likely mean that the automobile will be the overwhelmingly dominant mode of transit to and from these facilities.
The Hanlon Business Park is located immediately north-west of the new School. Passenger vehicles are the dominant mode of transportation for employees to this Business Park. Alternative transport is difficult due to a number of specific barriers.

The specific barriers associated with these locations include
- On the west side is the Hanlon Expressway which is a four-lane, separate highway with a speed limit of 80 km/h. Shoulders are soft, there are no sidewalks, speeds are excessive and there is a high percentage of truck traffic.
- On the east side is Gordon St. which has somewhat lower speeds but traffic is heavy and lanes are tight.
- On the north side is the Hanlon Creek Conservation Area which has some limited, narrow dirt trails.
